A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR: Satya Nath Dutta, a brave jawan of No. 27 company of Assam Rifles, has been selected for the prestigious Shaurya Chakra gallantry award of the Indian Military for his valour and courageous action. He will be honoured with the award by the President of India on August 15 during the Independence Day celebration in New Delhi.

Satya Nath Dutta is the son of Siddheswar Dutta, who was also a retired officer of the same Assam Rifles, permanently residing at Gharmora-Na Pamuwa village near North Lakhimpur town of the district. The jawan will be honoured with the gallantry award for the success he achieved on June 4 in Ukhrul district of Manipur by launching an operation, accompanied by three fellow jawans, against a gang of weapon dealers who supplied arms to insurgent groups.

On that day, they stopped a Gypsy van of the weapon dealers. Satya Nath Dutta captured two weapon dealers showing his courage, bravery and presence of mind while the other three jawans gheraoed the van during the secret operation. A total of two AK-47 rifles, three 9mm pistols, one 12 mm rifle, 5,045 round cartridges, one GPS, one compass, one remote control IED and seven maps for identifying the secret camps of the insurgents were recovered from the possession of the weapon dealers. The credit of the success of the operation goes to Satya Nath Dutta and that is why the gallant jawan has been selected for the honour. He is currently posted in Manipur.
