Assamese community in Pune pays rich tributes to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika

Biswanath Chariali: The Assamese community, Pune paid rich tributes to music maestro Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his death anniversary at the ELTIS auditorium, Model Colony under the aegis of Jyotirmay Das, Dipak Das, Robin Borthakur and Umar Majid of ‘Mumbai Samnnanay Group’ in association with Devika Borthakur, a well-known Xattriya exponent on November 10.

Speaking on the occasion, Samiron Phukon and Rajib Borkotoki, president and general secretary, respectively of Asomi observed that Dr. Hazarika was known for his baritone and diction as a singer. They further added that he was known for poetic compositions and parables which touched on themes ranging from romance to social and political commentary and for his use of folk music as a composer. Distinguished guest Dr. Hrishikesh Kashyapa commented that the event was a great step towards an intercultural exchange of regional music through translation, leading not only towards a better understanding of cultures but also towards the preservation of such masterpieces in the literature and hearts of other communities across the world.

Marathi versions of some of Hazarika’s songs translated by Vijaya Dev were released on the occasion. Classical vocalist Priyal Sathe presented the Marathi versions of Dil Hum Hum Kare from the film Rudaali and O Videshi Bandhu from Chamelee Memsaab. The members of Asomi presented Hazarika’s immortal number Manuhe manuhar babe.

Asomi has been working towards bridging the gap between Northeast India and Maharashtra by undertaking such socio-cultural activities. The members of the Assamese community residing in Pune organize such events involving artists and prominent personalities from Assam and other States of the northeast to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region.
