PATHSALA: Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Munindra Sarma on Saturday laid the foundation for two schemes for flood protection in the entire area from the mighty Pahumarariver.

One scheme will be implemented at Hakartup area and another one in Kalarguri area. The water resource department will complete the work where all total Rs 4.5 crore will be spent. In the first scheme, Rs 2.5 crore and in the other scheme Rs 2 crore will be spent, both sanctioned by the State Disaster Management Fund. Seeing the flood ravages of the Pahumara River in the last season, the funds were sanctioned in order to save the people from floods.

In first scheme, 700 metres of embankment expansion and repairing and 450 metres erosion protection by geo bags and another 270 metres by RCC porcupine will be done. In the next scheme, 2,700 metres of embankment will be repaired at Hakartup.

Two meetings were also arranged and the Deputy Commissioner urged the people to keep strict vigil on the works.
