LAKHIMPUR: The two-day long Bhagwat Purana recitation and interpretation event organized at Maitree Ashram of Lakhimpur district concluded successfully on Tuesday.

The event was organized in the revered memory of Gunada Bhuyan and Lakhi Phukan, the founders of the Asharam, which was established following the ideology of non-violence and humanitarianism of Mahatma Gandhi and his disciple Vinoba Bhave. Over thousands of people from various parts of the district paid deep tribute to the noble women who sacrificed their whole life for the poor and the needy people despite being born in well-to-do families.

Lakhimpur Postgraduate College Principal Rukma Gohain Baruah inaugurated the event on Monday. “One cannot be a man in the true sense until and unless his heart is saturated with spiritual consciousness. The recitation and listening to the Bhagawata Purana and adherence of the spiritual ideology advocated by the holy scripture purifies one’s mind and leads him to the real path of life,” said Rukma Gohain Baruah while delivering the inaugural speech.

The event began with a cleanliness and plantation drive led by social activists Hema Chutia, Pona Dutta, Naba Baruah and Khodeswar Gogoi. Phuleswar Borah lit the ceremonial lamp. A group of woman artistes from Jorhat staged a bhaona titled Rukmini Haran in the evening on Tuesday.
