Bimal Barkakati: A Tribute

Bimal Barkakati: A Tribute

Sometimes, he would take Chakra to drive him to a relative’s place even if he didn’t have to go there. Bimal khura would later justify saying he did not want the driver to go jobless that day! And thus he helped people all throughout his life!

At 78, when many of his surviving peers would be wondering how to spend their pass time, Bimal Barkakati was still a busy professional. Served Assam government as a senior financial adviser, he is said to be one of the very few experts on government financial rules in the state. That’s the reason what kept him busy doing consultations, coaching, and writing books. His book on financial rules is still considered no less than a Bible by new bureaucrats coming from outside the state and natives as well. Till his last breath, he was busy providing consultation and coaching to job aspirants in various sectors such as civil service, banking etc.

Above and all, he was the most loved and respected person in his entire family and Dakhin Sarania locality of Guwahati. He was the saviour for many in times of distress in the hillock, also inhabited by a substantial population of Harijans. His popularity was evident from the sea of people staying put around his house till late night to console the aggrieved family when the news of his death along with driver Chakra (Chakreswar Deka) and brother Saral Barkakati in a road accident came in the evening of October 1.

Though not prolonged, my association with khura was deep and genuine. I would forever cherish the thrilling memory of taking him around Arwah cave of Cherrapunjee and seeing his confidence on me growing after that! On the day of his adya shraddha, I pay my humblest and sincere tribute to Bimal khura, his brother and Chakra.
