BISWANATH CHARIALI: With the Assembly elections round the corner and model code of conduct in enforcement, Biswanath Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah on Saturday had a detailed discussion with the bankers of the district. Besides briefing the bankers their roles in the election time, Sarmah asked them to strictly adhere to the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India with respect to cash withdrawal during the election period. The bankers were also instructed to monitor all cash transactions and submit a daily report to him with regards to withdrawals amounting more than Rs. 1 lakh. Further, the bankers were also asked to intimate the Income Tax department for cash withdrawals amounting more than Rs. 10 lakh. To facilitate prompt and speedy service to candidates with regard to opening of back accounts for election related expenses, the Deputy Commissioner instructed bankers to take such requests on priority basis.

Further, keeping in view the requirement of cash for tea gardens, Sarmah asked the bankers to allow such heavy amount withdrawals, though after proper scrutiny. He asked the bankers that interests of tea gardens should not be affected by imposing the cash withdrawal limit on them.
