DIGBOI: As expected, the BJP stalwart Bhaskar Sharma once again became a popular choice among the Margherita electorates who won the seat with 86,237 votes dusting his rival Congress candidate Monoranjan Borgohain who could manage just 28021 votes.

Sharma who has won the second terms consecutively from Margherita Legislative Assembly seat has proved his political metal defeating all his 5 rival candidates despite having significant anti-incumbency factors.

Sanjay Kumar Deb of Assam Jatiya Parishad however stood third in the row securing 22,879 votes.

Meanwhile, Suren Phukan, the BJP candidate from Digboi seat brought in a landslide victory with a difference of 26,402 votes. While Phukan managed 58,054 votes, Congress candidate Shibath Chetiya got 31,652 votes in his favour.

In the 2016 Assembly election, Phukan had snatched Digboi seat from persistent Congress grip by a margin of 14,293 votes.

"Even if I go on a vacation amidst the poll campaign my success is inevitable," the statement of Phukan after the declaration of Congress ticket for Digboi seat finally materialized today. He had grossly underestimated Congress candidate Chetiya who was considered to be an imperfect match for the poll.

Though the official announcement to this effect is still awaited, the happiness and joy among the supporters and party workers of the Saffron brigade both at Margherita and Digboi are worth mentioning.

Both the winner candidates were rejoicing at the success with a grand reception treat by highly spirited party leaders and supporters.
