BJP registers emphatic victory in Karbi Anglong civic poll

HOWRAGHAT/Bokajan: The ruling BJP registered a landslide victory in the civic poll held in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong autonomous district on Tuesday by winning all the nine town committees of both the districts. Rival Congress has been totally disseminated in all the urban areas of the district after the results were declared on Thursday evening. Elections for all the local bodies were held during the 12-hour bandh called by various organizations of Karbi Anglong. Polling concluded without any interruption and heavy turnout was recorded.

The town committees which went for poll were Diphu, Howraghat, Bokajan, Bakalia, Dokmoka, Hamren, Baithalangso, Donkamokum and Langhing. According to results declared, the BJP won all the seats in 7 town committees except Howraghat where Congress won in one ward while BJP inclined independent candidate won from another ward. In Baithalangso Town Committee, BJP registered straight victory in four seats while Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) won two seats and one seat was won by BJP inclined independent candidate. In Bokajan Town Committee, BJP won six seats out of seven while Congress managed to win one seat. Till filing of this report, counting was going on in Diphu. Out of the 14 seats, results of seven had been declared till filing of the report and the BJP had won all the seven seats and maintained lead in maximum seats.

“We were hopeful of a clean sweep in both the autonomous districts,” said Amarsing Tisso, triumphant BJP leader of East Karbi Anglong district committee after the poll results were declared.
