Breaking: Area in Guwahati's Pandu Railway New Colony marked as Containment Zone

Guwahati: After detection of Covid-19 positive patients at the Pandu Railway New Colony in Guwahati, Assam, an area in the vicinity has been marked as 'containment zone' and sealed by the district administration.

Railway Colony to the north, New Colony road to the south, the Jai Hind Club Chariali to the east, and the railway colony road to the west have been marked as the extremities of the containment zone by the authorities. Any violation of this order will attract action under the provisions of 'The Assam Covid-19 Regulations, 2020', 'The Disaster Management Act 2005', 'The Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897' and other relevant laws, officials said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Assam Government has adopted a policy of marking Covid-affected areas as 'containment zone' so as to ensure minimal disruptions in the day-to-day activities.

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced that the Government will try and replace the pre-existing 'red zone', 'orange zone', and 'green zone' concept with the Containment Zones and Buffer Zones. However, once a district reports more than 200 cases of coronavirus, the colour-coding policy could once again come into effect, he said.

"Our containment policy is this – when a case is detected in an area, that area will be visited by the Deputy Commissioner and the District Health A and the area that could be infected by the patient that will be marked as a containment zone and an area surrounding that will be marked as buffer zone", Sarma informed the media in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, Assam has so far reported 1,057 positive cases, and around 98% of these have been detected in returnees who have been kept in institutional quarantine as per protocol. There are 925 active patients in the state who are receiving treatment for the respiratory illness, while 4 patients have been killed by the respiratory infection.
