Caritas India Launches Flood Recovery Project in Lakhimpur District

LAKHIMPUR: Caritas India, a non-governmental organization (NGO), launched its flood recovery project in Lakhimpur district on Thursday. Under the project supported by ECHO (European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid), the organization started the project in July and is currently working with worst-affected families of 23 flood-affected villages under Karunabari, Naoboicha and Telahi Development Block under Lakhimpur district. The flood recovery project by Caritas India is focusing on rapid humanitarian assistance to the excluded flood-affected communities, cash support through bank transfer, installation of community water filtration units in 10 villages and WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) needs of children and women.

On the occasion of the official launching of the project, a ceremonial event along with a coordination programme was organized at North Lakhimpur Press Club under the aegis of the organization. It began with the lighting of ceremonial lamp by journalist and NLPC president Sailen Baruah and PAD secretary Wilfred Topno. In the meeting, the problems caused by natural disasters like flood, problems in possessing pure drinking water, natural pollution, waste matter management and many other issues were discussed in details. Dignitaries of various NGOs and flood-affected people of several districts under the district were present in the programme which was held under the management of ECHO programme manager Bablu Sarkar and WASH coordinator Japulin Dutta.
