SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has once again shown how his government is committed to stand by people of the state in distress without any classification and discrimination. He flew down here in an IAF fixed wing chopper today late morning from Dispur and made an aerial survey of the landslide hit areas of Karimganj, Hailakandi and then Cachar, the scene of great and unprecedented calamity in which 21 persons including 8 children were killed. The district administrations in their own way handed over cheque of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kith and kin as a declared policy of the state government

After landing at Silchar, the Chief Minister along with Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Fisheries, Excise and Forest, held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioners of the three districts, officials of different departments in the conference hall of the district administration. Also present were MPs, and MLAs. He reviewed the updated situation of COVID-19 and flood with Barak and its tributaries in spate, following incessant rains. The administration has now to fight on twin fronts, the CM made it clear for which the administrative machinery has to be alert and vigilant with all preparedness. He said the State will extend all necessary help as it has always been doing.

The meeting with the three districts at this critical juncture assumes significance in its own way. While man can hardly rein in nature's fury, poor and downtrodden finding no space raise structures even in risky hilly zones. Forest department has to check it and dissuade the people from building any such unauthorised houses. The Chief Minister took stock of the preparedness of the health department to meet the challenge from COVID-19 which has touched the figure of 126 positive cases. He was also briefed about the preparedness of water resources department to face flood threat, an annual feature of the valley. Later on the Chief Minister addressed the waiting media persons.
