Children fall unconscious post Measles Rubella Vaccination in Udalguri

TANGLA: At least five students in the age group of 10 years and 14 years were rendered unconscious after being administered with measles-rubella (MR) vaccination in Harisinga Higher Secondary School at Harisinga in Udalguri district on Friday evening.

Reportedly, Priyanka Sangma (14) was the first to be admitted to Udalguri Civil Hospital, followed by Edward Daimari(12) The name of some other students are yet to be confirmed and they are undergoing treatment. Sources said a total of 220 students were administered with MR vaccine in the school.

“We have collected the blood samples of the ailing students and no traces of malaria or typhoid have been found. Only those students whose physical condition was weak suffered,” District Immunization Officer, Udalguri, Dr. Ganesh Ch. Brahma informed this correspondent. Apart from the two students, some others also suffered nausea after they were vaccinated. He further informed that it was the first reported incident in relation to MR vaccine in Udalguri district.

The parents of the ailing students have alleged that their children suffered due to the vaccine. Along with other parts of State, the Measles and Rubella vaccine is being administered to children in the age group of 9 months to 15 years. Sources in the health department informed few parents were very uncooperative and fear was written large on their faces and in those of their children. Few students, it is learnt, refused to get vaccinated.
