‘Composite culture of Assam not to be destroyed through Citizenship Bill’

DIGBOI, May 17: Commenting on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as a bitter pill in the State of Assam, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday made his stand clear during his visit to Margherita in Tinsukia district that he would ensure that the composite culture of Assam was not destroyed through the bill which the people of Assam were opposing tooth-and-nail.

Sonowal, often called as the jatiya nayak of Assam, was addressing the media here in Margheita. He said that the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) was carrying its preliminary works across the State and extending his solidarity to this effect, said that he would at all cost protect the interest of the people of Assam and keep the heterogeneous people united for greater peace and development.

Sonowal, who was accompanied by a host of MLAs, including Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, earlier visited Namdang Santipara Buddha Vihara and later the Mounglang Monastery (Bhante baba’s temple) at Ledo. He offered prayers and enquired about ailing religious leader Bhante baba’s health. He also assured of erecting a guest house at the premises of the Vihara from the local MLA’s fund, with assistance from the Assam Government.

Meanwhile, Sonowal also participated in an open session of the Rongali Bihu celebration as the chief guest where he was felicitated by various local organizations and Bihu committee. The concluding Rongali Bihu function was organized at Margherita Field by Margherita Businessmen Association.
