Continuing Medical Education To Address Addiction Problem Held In Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The 14th mid-term Continuing Medical Education (CME) of Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), Assam State Branch was held in Lakhimpur on Saturday in a befitting manner. The event was organized on a crucial theme- ‘Addiction: A silent killer in the society’.

The theme has been chosen in reference to the present society where addiction has severely affected a section of people causing health hazard in addition to affecting the society with negative impact in many other ways. The event aimed at addressing the addiction problem of alcohol, volatile substances, cannabis, opioid, tobacco, the new entrant internet comprising of gaming, social media, porn and online shopping and making the people aware of their mental health.

Internationally acclaimed innovator, Padma Shri Uddhab Kumar Bhorali inaugurated the event participating as chief guest. In connection with the theme, six talk events were organized in three sessions. The first session was chaired by Dr. Suresh Chakraborty and co-chaired by Dr. Ramananda Saikia. In this session, Dr. Dipesh Bhagabati delivered his speech on ‘Effect of addiction in younger generation’ while Dr. Kamal Kalita spoke on ‘Volatile substance abuse and its management’. The second session was held with Dr. Anamika Phukan in the chair while Dr. Amanda Dihingia was present as co-chairperson. Dr. Nahid Suraiya Islam presented her speech on ‘Internet addiction’ in the second session.

On the other hand, Dr. Pankaj Losan Sarmah talked on ‘Gateway drugs and its impact in society’. The third session was chaired by Dr. Jayanta Dutta. Dr. DD Mili was present in the session as co-chairperson. In this session, Dr. Teme Kena delivered his speech on ‘Alcohol dependence syndrome and its management’ while Dhruba Jyoti Bhuyan spoke on ‘Opioid dependence treatment: Options in pharmacotherapy’.
