Mangaldai: Darrang district administration has taken a unique initiative to promote the handloom products of the weavers of the district in the global market with a special marketing brand called ‘Darrangini’, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Darrang Pankaj Chakravarty at Mangaldai on Tuesday.

“In this present day context of highly competitive global market, every product needs to have unique characteristics for marketing which is popularly known in the promotional business as the unique selling point or USP. Considering this, we are taking initiative to promote our local handloom under the brand name Darrangini,” added Pankaj Chakravorty while addressing a meet of progressive handloom artisans and entrepreneurs of the district on the occasion of the fourth National Handloom Day organized by the District Handloom and Textile department at its office premises at Gerimari, Mangaldai on Tuesday.

He urged upon the potential local artisans to take up the industry with scientific and professional motive, to prove themselves in the global market and also help thousands of unemployed locals. Speaking on the occasion, PK Goswami, Lead District Bank Manager, pointed out that the district has a bad record of recovery of bank loans in the past. However, keeping in mind the high potentiality of this industry in the district, the credit plan for the sector in this current fiscal year had been increased to Rs 2 crore. But he lamented that no artisan had so far approached him for any loan.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Assistant Director, Handloom and Textiles of Darrang, Bipul Kalita said that Sipajhar and Kalaigaon were two potential producers of Nooni yarn, but due to the ignorance of the local artisans, this raw Nooni yarn is taken away by the traders of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district and it again reaches Darrang market as a finished product.

The meet also witnessed felicitation of nine prominent handloom artisans of the district with a letter of citation and a gamosa. District Development Manager, NABARD, Biswajit Deb, District Public Relation Officer Manimala Gogoi, women activist Nilima Devi and progressive entrepreneur Sewali Goswami Kalita were the distinguished guests to attend the function.
