KOKRAJHAR: The Bodo National Students' Union (BONSU) on Monday asserted that the delimitation of constituencies and draft of de-reserving ST constituencies in the 6th schedule were an anti tribal move and government of India should ensure protection of political rights of indigenous tribal people.

The BONSU for and on behalf of Bodo and other indigenous tribal communities of Assam strongly condemned and opposed the government notification of delimitation as it is very unfortunate, anti-tribal and unconstitutional.

In a press conference held here, the president of BONSU Bonjit Monjil Basumatary said as per the article 330 sub-clause, section 1(C) of the Indian Constitution constituted the reservation of Scheduled Tribe in the house of common which clearly states equal representation for the weak, marginalized, under represented, and special protection in the autonomous districts of Assam. He said historically and constitutionally the Bodo indigenous and tribal people of Assam are oppressed, suppressed and dominated by the non-indigenous, non-tribal people coming from different parts of India and abroad.

"We demand 75% reservation of seats in the Assam constituent assembly if it is increased from 126 to more constituent assembly seats, or even if it remains the same constituent assembly seats, as per the constitutional provision of India," he said, adding that through this delimitation, the BONSU wanted reservation of the Chief Minister of Assam from the indigenous tribal community as we have every constitutional right and provision."He also said the mon tribal people of Assam have been snatching away the political rights of indigenous people since Indian Independence and dominating their legitimate rights and obligations.

Basumatary said no non-tribal people have the right to oppose the legitimate demand of the tribal people as they have no historical and constitutional rights and moral obligation to snatch away the political self-determination and self-autonomy of the indigenous Bodo and tribal indigenous people of Assam.
