LAKHIMPUR: The people of Boginadi area in Lakhimpur district have expressed vehement resentment against the National Highway Authority, State Government and district administration regarding the critically deplorable condition of the stretch of National Highway-15 (NH-15), which falls under Kadam Revenue Circle of the district.

The long stretch of the highway from Charaimoria near North Lakhimpur town to Padumoni Aai Than, covering Gagaldubi, has turned deplorable and a death trap for commuters. As a result of it, the people of Lakhimpur, travellers from other districts and other States are suffering since a long time. On Tuesday, the people of Kadam, under the banner of Kadam Tiniali Yuva Samaj, staged protest to demand the immediate repair of the highway. In this connection, the local people, led by the Kadam Tiniali Yuva Samaj president Manasi Rajkhowa and secretary Jiaul Ali, staged sit-in at Kadam Tiniali ignoring torrential rain. During the demonstration, the protesters rent the air by shouting various slogans in support of their demand. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Circle Officer of Kadam Revenue Circle. They demanded the National Highway Authority to initiate immediate move for the revolution of the issue

This highway connects Dhemaji district and Pasighat of Arunachal Pradesh. Moreover, the highway leads the way to Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivsagar and other districts of Upper Assam via Bogibeel Bridge over the mighty Brahmaputra. Every day thousands of vehicles from North Assam, Guwahati and other districts of the State ply along this highway to communicate with the neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh and other aforementioned districts. Commuters are faced with problems while travelling along the dilapidated portion of the highway. Despite such circumstances, neither the National Highway Authority nor the Lakhimpur district administration and the State Government has allegedly taken any initiative to repair the damaged portion.

Alleging dereliction on the part of the National Highway Authority, State Government and district administration towards repairing the highway, various organizations of the district have also expressed vehement resentment over the issue. Chaoldhowa-Boginadi regional unit of AASU, Boginadi, North Lakhimpur regional units of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parishad, Chaoldhowa regional units of Veer Lachit Sena, Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti, Lakhimpur district bodies of Asomiya Yuva Mancha, Anti-Corruption Youth Power, Assam have demanded the authorities concerned to repair the deplorable stretch of the highway at the earliest. Otherwise, they have warned of initiating protest programme in the upcoming days.
