Dhakuakhana farmer inspires others with successful plum production

LAKHIMPUR: It is said that where there is a will, there is a way and as you sow, so shall you reap. The meaning of such encouraging maxims, popular among the common people, has been realized with the success story of Chandra Gogoi, an enthusiastic farmer of Dhakuakhana subdivision in Lakhimpur district. He has made it possible by earning a lot by cultivating plum, commonly known as apple plum, and Thai plum on his farm.

Through this unique cultivation, Chandra Gogoi, a permanent inhabitant of Mohemari Gaon under the subdivision, has proved that more benefit can be earned by cultivating hybrid species of seeds of crops or fruits in one bigha of land than what can be harvested from the traditional cultivation done in the same area of land. Notably, Chandra Gogoi is a model Muga cultivator who has set an example among the diligent Muga rearers. In 2018, the progressive farmer was potent enough to receive Model Farmer Award from Lakhimpur District Sericulture Department for his success in Muga cultivation and setting an example for others.

Simultaneously with the rearing of Muga, Chandra Gogoi has cultivated various types of crops and fruits every year. Last year in April, the farmer set up a plum farm in one bigha of land near his residence, wherein he planted the apple plum and Thai Plum. At present, the plants are seen laden with fruits in abundance. The farm has drawn the attraction of the media persons as well as the onlookers.

Chandra Gogoi said that he had already earned a good amount of money with the first harvest of the Thai plums with an average production of 50 to 60 kilograms of fruits in each plant. Similarly, he had a good production of the apple plum too, which was sold in the markets in Dhakuakhana town at rates ranging from Rs 60 to Rs 80 per kg. He said that there were 144 plum plants on the farm at present. He expects that each plant will produce 80-90 kg of fruits next year. “In the same plum farm, more production can be attained by cultivating other vegetables like French bean, cabbage, and tomato. Riverine sandy soil is the model soil for the plum cultivation,” he said.
