LAKHIMPUR: Massive erosion caused by River Korha has wreaked havoc at ObhataSampora village (Ward No. 6) under BorshamukhGaonPanchayat of Dhakuakhana constituency in Lakhimpur district.

Notably, the river has been gobbling up extensive cultivated area, including paddy fields, black gram fields along with forest land under the said GaonPanchayat since 4-5 years. At present too, the river has continued the devastating erosion and eroded away the Shali paddy fields from one end to the other in the village.

Though the erosion caused by the river has affected the people since a long time, no permanent erosion protection measure has been implemented in the affected areas till day. However, it is known that a scheme in order to check the erosion, with the investment of a fund of Rs. 20,00,000, was initiated by the Mising Autonomous Council last year. But the engaged contractor allegedly completed the project by just installing some porcupines here and there. It was alleged that the contractor concerned had not implemented the work as per estimate. As a result of it, the proportion of the erosion is increasing in the village instead of decreasing.

The people of the village, including those of the other erosion-affected areas, have consecutively demanded to implement an effective erosion prevention scheme to mitigate the burning problem. But the Panchayat members, local MLA Naba Kumar Doley and the subdivisional administration have allegedly turned a deaf ear to their demands. At this, the affected people have expressed vehement resentment and once again demanded the MLA to initiate steps to resolve the problem in the current lean season. Otherwise, they have issued threat of boycotting the forthcoming assembly poll.
