Erosion protection measures begin in Dhakuakhana of Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: The devastating erosion caused by the mighty Brahmaputra has caused havoc in the Kherkota Gaon Panchayat area under Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district.

Notably, the mighty river has continued its erosion at Bali-Madarguri part under the Gaon Panchayat since a long period. Growing water level of the river has caused massive erosion at present in the same area. Though the Water Resources Department initiated steps to implement erosion protection measures in the affected area, these subsequently came to in a halt due to the lockdown. As a result of it, the river proceeded towards the main embankment by eroding a large extent of its bank.

However, the governments have granted some relaxations of lockdown advisories of late so that some necessary and emergency activities can be performed for the greater interest of the public. As a result, implementation of the erosion protection measures was started in the affected area on Wednesday. But the inclement weather of the day posed hurdle in installing the geo-tube in the eroded area. On the other hand, Panchayat and Rural Development minister –cum- Dhakuakhana MLA Naba Kumar Doley visited the erosion-affected areas of the Bramaputra under his constituency on Wednesday and also inspected the Chichi-Tekeliphuta embankment of the mighty river to take stock of its condition. He instructed the officers of the Water Resources Department to expedite the execution of the erosion protection scheme and to complete it before the rainy season set in.
