SILCHAR: The border district of Karimganj on the whole and comparatively still remains a safe zone with no abnormal rise in COVID-19 positive cases. However 2 deaths in the last 48 hours for the first time have been reported in the district. Both the deaths occurred at SMCH. Shamim Ahmed (40) of Badarpur, suffering from heart diseases, tested positive while under treatment. The district administration performed last rites near his home town of Badarpur, adhering to mandated protocol.

Mrinmoy Das (67) of Chamela Bazar under Ram Krishnanagar block died of COVID-19. His family however claimed his was not a COVID-19 positive case. He was admitted with health complications of old age. Yet, the district administration gave clarification and declared the death by COVID-19. His last rites were performed under the care of the administration at Cherakundi cremation ground. In Cachar, around 1600 to 1700 positive cases have been detected till date. But, there is no community spread, pointed out Deputy Commissioner Keerti Jalli at a meet with senior citizens on Thursday. An area of concern is that around 267 jawans of Assam Rifles, SSB and CRPF have been infected by the virus. Even as further lock down in Cachar has been ruled out as of now, night curfew on all days from 7pm to 7am and total lockdown on Saturday and Sunday will continue.
