Flood situation grim: 131 villages still under water in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The flood situation is still grim in the affected revenue villages across Lakhimpur district. The present deluge has still been submerging a total of 131 villages under 6 Revenue Circles (RC) of the district affecting the normal life of 55,587 people. It is reported that the people in the flood-affected areas are suffering a lot as regards to maintaining their day to day lives while the livestock has faced the scarcity of fodder.

However, flood has receded in the North Lakhimpur and Nowboicha RCs to some extent. Yet 63 villages under North Lakhimpur RC have been still under flood, caused by Ranganadi and Subansiri rivers. Similarly, flood receded in 14 villages out of 33 under Naoboicha RC which had been reeling under flood till Thursday. A total of 19 villages of that RC have been inundated by flood at present. On the other hand, flash flood caused by Dropang and Pichala rivers has inundated seven villages under Narayanpur RC afresh increasing the number of affected villages to 20 from Wednesdays figure 11. A total of 12 villages under Bihpuriya RC and 6 villages under Kadam RC of North Lakhimpur subdivision have been still under flood.

Similarly, flash flood has submerged 6 villages afresh— NC Lutasur Indur, Borbil-Bandena, Kankan Chapori-Baghchuk, NC Tekeliphuta, NC Bogori and NC Lechera under Dhakuakhana subdivision. Of this subdivision, five villages under Subansiri RC and 6 villages under Dhakuakhana RC have been under flood at present.

The management of NEEPCO operated Ranganadi Hydro Electric Plant (RHEP) has been releasing the excess water from Ranganadi dam for the fifth day since Monday. The Radial Gate No. 4 of the Ranganadi dam was opened by 1600 mm from 9.30pm on Thursday, 1700 mm from 5.00 am, 1900 mm from 5.45 am, 1600 mm from 10.05 am on Friday. The RHEP management has been releasing the excess water from the dam through the same gate by opening it 1400 mm since 11am till the time of filing of this report.

The district administration distributed 58.20qt of rice, 11.07qt of dal, 3.32qt of salt as relief items among the flood affected persons at 12 relief distribution points under North Lakhimpur and Naoboicha RCs. On the other hand, 846 numbers of tarpaulin, 1000 water pouches and 8 packets of sanitary pads were distributed among the flood affected people till date.
