Grocery Shop owner ‘being held captive’ rescued by Karbi Anglong Police from Dimapur

Guwahati: Based on input, Karbi Anglong’s Khotkhoti Police on Sunday launched an operation at Dimapur and apprehended six kidnappers on charges of kidnapping one grocery shop owner on June 3 last.

The six apprehended kidnappers were identified as Jaan Mesh, Ranjit Karmakar, Kelvin Kachari, Sunip Yungar Jamir, Diganjay Kachari and Tengjung Hasnu.

As per police report, the alleged kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs 40 lakh from the family members of the grocery shop owner namely Kalpajyoti Nath.

Police officials also mentioned that during their preliminary course of the investigation, they came to know from their respective sources that grocery shop owner Kalpajyoti Nath was held captive by the kidnappers at Puranabazaar area in Dimapur for last six days.

Based on a complaint lodged by the family members of the grocery shop Khotkhoti police launched an operation in Dimapur and rescued Kalpajyoti Nath from Puranabazaar on Sunday.

Although, the prime accused in the kidnapping case identified as David Kachari is still absconding from the spot.

Meanwhile, police have been interrogating all the six apprehended kidnappers in connection to the case.

It may be mentioned that as per records of the kidnapping cases in Assam by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), around 3244 adults from the age group of 18 to 30 years and around 1433 adults of the age group 30 to 60 years old were kidnapped in Assam till 2016.

It may be mentioned that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) had revised the various proformas for collection of information by incorporating various new Crime Heads. NCRB has also developed in-house software in 2014 for collection of above data from the SCRB/CIDs of all the States and UTs. The NCRB has already developed 14 additional proforma in 2017 for collection of information on attacks against media personnel/RTI activists/whistleblowers/ persons from North East, preventive arrests, notices u/s 41 CrPC, unclaimed seizures (4I/102 CrPC), etc.
