SILCHAR: Jirighat in the Lakhipur sub-division of Cachar is often in focus for smuggling of contraband goods. Jirighat is located at the border point of Jiribam in Manipur. The check gate manned by Assam police is close to the bridge over river Jiri that divides the two districts of Cachar and Jiribam. It remains on alert 24X7.

However, some smugglers and peddlers of intoxicating materials as well as valued goods manage to give the security forces the slip at times. They take to the tough and difficult hilly routes through shrubs and bushes to evade intervention by police and arrest. Once arrested, they have to lose their goods in possession and the money attached with it. It comes as double shock. Despite all the hazards and risks, the illicit business goes on. This is besides the fact that the police often get information in advance from informants about the movement of suspicious vehicles with smugglers.

Sources informed that the police team headed by SDPO P.P. Das consisting of personnel — included women constables — from both Lakhipur and Jirighat police stations detained an auto rickshaw at Lalpani on National Highway-37 at around 5.30 pm on January 30. Following the check-in process, the police recovered eight soap cases containing heroin weighing 103 gram. The market value of heroin is estimated at Rs 5 lakh. The contraband good was recovered from the two woman passengers identified as Jounu Gante (50) and Hainn Gante (35).

While Jounu is from the village of Hukulkhal under Jiribam Police Station, Hainn Gante hails from Lalpani Hawkipunji under Jirighat Police Station. Both the accused were produced before the Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate Court of Lakhipur, which sent them to Silchar Central Jail. A case was registered against them under the NDPS Act.
