Hmar Inpui Expresses Concern Over Safety of Women Folk

Special Correspondent

Silchar: Hmar Inpui, the apex body of the Hmar tribe, is deeply concerned at the lack of security and safety of women in general and Hmar citizens in particular in Cachar district. This is evident from the recent outraging of the modesty and murder of a 17-year-old Hmar girl Elizabeth Sungte of Bagbahar under Dwarbond police station. It was followed by the mysterious disappearance of 14-year girl Hrishita Saha, a student of Class IX of Holy Cross School of this town. She remains still traceless and there is no clue about her even after 48 years of her disappearance.

The horrendous crime committed on the Hmar girl has been taken as a matter of grave concern by Hmar Inpui as an ominous signal for the safety of Hmar people of the Cachar district, known for it being an island of peace and harmony. Hmar Inpui demands that the perpetrators of such heinous crime are brought to book and meted out exemplary punishment.

Hmar Inpui, however, records its appreciation of the efforts of various sister organizations to exert pressure on the police administration so that justice is done to the victim, Elizabeth Sungte, and the criminals involved are taught a lesson for life. So that such criminal activities are not repeated again. Hmar Inpui also appeals to all saner and conscientious citizens cutting across all castes and creeds to rise as one man against such crimes.

Hmar Inpui at the same time lauds the police administration of Cachar for its prompt action in nabbing suspects involved in the crime. It hopes the actual perpetrators will soon be put on trial. It has also sent out an appeal to the civil administration headed by Laya Madduri, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, for extending appropriate compensation to the family members of Elizabeth Sungte. This was stated in a press release issued by Hmar Inpui signed by Rev. Benjamin Shakum, a joint secretary.
