SILCHAR: An intensive explosive device (IED) planted near the culvert in Jujung Hills of Lakhipur subdivision of Cachar, 10 kms away from Jiribam district of Manipur created commotion and sensation in the area which was recovered by police. Cachar SP rushed to the spot after receiving information. In fact, the area has been disturbed for long due to the movement of Manipur based extremist groups through the jungle-infested zone with easy accessibility to Mizoram and Dima Hasao district. The intensive search operation by police and Assam Rifles succeeded in reining the extremists.

Still some groups try to make forays and also get involved in misadventure with the sole objective of disruptive activities. Though the IED was planted on Wednesday, the intelligence wing with the help of a sniffer dog could locate four persons including a woman, suspected to belong to People Liberation Army (PLA). They have been identified as Ahmed Hossain (36), Abdul Shahid Choudhury (31), Saleh Uddin (32) and Lakibul Nessa (39). They have been arrested from different places of Lakhipur sub division. The operation to nab them was launched by a team of Additional SP of Cachar, SDPO and O/C of Lakhipur.

The IED was deactivated taking it to the deserted jungle place by the police. The four accused after interrogation were produced before ADJM Court of Lakhipur which sent him to police remand for further cross-examination. Their motive, according to a source, was to cause blast to passing commercial vehicles passing through Silchar-Imphal Highway 37. The four accused will face prosecution under 121/121 (A) IPC and RW 40 Explosive Act 1904 vide case no. 342. A few days back, an IED blast in Churachandpur of Manipur made Assam Rifles Officer and his family the target, a handiwork of PLA believed to act at the behest of China.
