International Conference on Game Theory held at Dibrugarh University

Dibrugarh: An international conference on Game Theory and Networks was organized by the Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University in collaboration with the Economics Department of Queen’s University, Belfast, the UK from September 6 to 9. The conference was a part of a three-year-long prestigious collaborative project between Surajit Borkotokey, a professor of Dibrugarh University and Rajnish Kumar of Queen’s University under the UK India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI).

The objective of the workshop which was jointly funded by the British Council and UGC was to provide a common platform to the researchers working in diverse disciplines to share their recent researches. The conference had a total of 25 oral presentations from the invited speakers and 16 poster presentations from the research scholars from various institutions of India and abroad.

The conference featured a number of internationally renowned mathematicians and economists who presented their works in the fields of mechanism design, social choice theory, network economics and cooperative games. Prominent among them were Sanjeev Goyal from the University of Cambridge, UK, Arunava Sen, ISI-Delhi, Michel Grabisch and Agnieszka Rusinowska from the University of Paris (I), France, Indrajit Ray from The Cardiff University, UK, Sinan Ertemel from Istanbul Technical University, Genjiu Xu from Northwestern Polytechnic University and his two students Rajnish Kumar from Queen’s University, Belfast and Saurav Bhattacharya from Royal Holloway, University of London, UK. There were several participants from various Indian institutions including ISI-Kolkata, IIT-Bombay, IIM-Ahmedabad, IIT-Indore, TERI and Ashoka University.

In recent years the Game theory has emerged as an interdisciplinary branch bringing together researchers from Mathematics, Economics, Management, Political Science, Networks and Computer Science, Engineering, Quantum Physics, Biological Sciences, Ecology and Environmental Sciences.

The UK India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI) started in April 2006 with the aim of enhancing educational links between India and the UK. UKIERI projects are funded from the UK by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British Council, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and Department for Economy and from India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department for Science and Technology, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, University Grants Commission and All India Council for Technical Education.

The event witnessed a bunch of prospective research scholars who have been engaged in serious research at different Indian institutions in the areas of Game Theory and Networks. The organizers announced two awards for the best poster presenters in order to encourage them for further improvements. Maniparna Karmakar of ISI, Kolkata and Pramod Mane of IIM, Indore were selected for these awards.

The event was the third of its kind in the Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University under the aegis of UKIERI.
