Kamrup (M) Court directs Kolkata Police to arrest Garga Chatterjee

Guwahati: In continuance of the Assam Government's attempts to arrest Garga Chatterjee, the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (S) No.1, of Guwahati in Kamrup (Matro) on Wednesday issued a warrant of arrest against the Kolkata man and instructed the officer-in-charge of Chetla Police Station to produce him before the Court on or before July 3 next.

The Judge also directed the Commissioner of Police of Kolkata to execute the warrant of arrest against Garga Chatterjee and ensure his production before the court at the earliest.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta, who has been tasked with arresting Chatterjee by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal himself, told media. "The Crime Branch had submitted an application at the sub-divisional judicial magistrate Kamrup (M) Court, and a new arrest warrant has been issued seeking the arrest of Chatterjee. Kolkata Police has been instructed to arrest him and present him. Although our team had gone to Kolkata and presented itself at the Commissioner's office, but did not receive cooperation.

It needs mention here that a team of Assam Police was earlier sent to arrest the man who professes to be a Bengali nationalist but had to return empty-handed. Talking to us yesterday, Gupta confessed that it was because the Kolkata Police refused to cooperate with their Assam counterparts. "Our team had gone to Kolkata with every intention of arresting the culprit under the directions of the CM. We had an arrest warrant that had been procured at the CJM Court and we were all geared up to bring him back. However, we had to approach the Kolkata Police as the city is under their jurisdiction. When we produced the warrant, the police said that the address that had been mentioned did not exist. That is their version, but we can say that they did not cooperate in the manner that we expected, and therefore, we have been unsuccessful in nabbing Chatterjee", Gupta clarified.

One of Chatterjee's controversial tweets

It may be recalled that Chatterjee had landed in the soup after a series of posts on Twitter where he had termed Chaolung Sukaphaa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, as a Chinese invader.
