Kaziranga National Bamboo Park to be Opened on October 14

As a commendable step towards conserving bamboo and growing more of it to spread awareness among the farmers, Kaziranga National Bamboo Park is to be opened in Kaziranga. The bamboo park is to be opened under the efforts of the farmers’ organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) who also runs Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park.

Speaking about the inauguration of the bamboo park in Kaziranga, KMSS advisor Akhil Gogoi says in a press conference, “The bamboo park will have 54 species available across the Northeast. Besides, a number of cane species will also be there in the park.”

The establishment of the bamboo park and conserving wide varieties of bamboo species is a praiseworthy effort by the KMSS which will make the visitors aware of the different types of bamboos. Although bamboo is a common sight for people living in Assam, there will be very few people who can identify the species of the bamboos and name them. Hence, to make people aware of the types and names of the bamboo, a wide range of bamboo species including Bhaluka, Jaati, Katahaa, Bijulee, Kalasi, Kako, Lathi bamboo, etc. are preserved in the bamboo park.

Apart from the bamboo species available in Assam, other bamboo species too are being collected from the neighbouring north-eastern states like Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland. Hence, this would be a one-of-its-kind experience for the visitors to be acquainted with different species of bamboos right in one place.

Stating more about the bamboo park, Gogoi said, “The bamboos in the park were planted three years back and these have grown up now. So, these can now be presented before the tourists who visit the orchid park.”

The Kaziranga National Bamboo Park is located in the campus of the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park.
