LAKHIMPUR: The much-awaited COVID-19 vaccination drive will kick off across the nation on Saturday with the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Lakhimpur District Health Department is all set to start the vaccination drive on the same day following the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). This was disclosed by District Surveillance Officer Dr. Shilpi Saikia and District Extension and Media Officer Madhab Chandra Phukan while addressing a press meet convened by the office of the Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Friday.

Addressing the mediapersons, Dr. Shilpi Saikia said that the first phase vaccination drive would be conducted at three session sites of the district selected by the State Government. These session sites are the North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital, Laluk Model Hospital and Boginadi Model Hospital. On Saturday, the vaccine will be administered to the health workers, not more than 100 in each of the session sites, whose names have been already registered in the CO-WIN (COVID Vaccine Intelligence Network) App, a digital platform created for real-time monitoring of COVID-19 vaccine delivery and distribution.

"For the first phase of vaccination drive, we have already received 362 vials of Covishield with 10 doses in each vial. They can be administered to 3,620 persons with .5ml dose. In NLCH, the vaccine will be administered to the North Lakhimpur urban area health workers whose names have already been registered in CO-WIN App while health workers under Bihpuriya Block Primary Health Centre (BPHC) will be administered the same at Laluk Model Hospital. Similarly, the vaccine will be given to the health workers under Boginadi BPHC at Boginadi Model Hospital session site. Covering the three session sites, a total of 300 health workers are targeted for the vaccination on the day," Dr. Shipi Saikia said.

The vaccine will not be administered to people who show an immediate or delayed onset of an allergic reaction to vaccines or injectable therapies, pharmaceutical products and food items, and pregnant and lactating women.

On the other hand, Madhab Chandra Phukan informed that the vaccination exercise would be guided by the principles of people's participation utilizing the experience of election booth strategy and Universal Immunization Program (UIP).

"In this regard, five officers will shoulder the responsibility of conducting the whole vaccination process smoothly monitoring the vaccine delivery and distribution. Three rooms, one for waiting of the persons to be vaccinated, other two for vaccination and observation have been arranged at each session site," Madhab Chandra Phukan added.

Dr Shilpi Saikia further stated that all kinds of due measures, on the part of the District Health Department, had been adopted and arranged in order to tackle any kind of 'Adverse Effects Following Immunization (AEFI)' with the establishment of health care cells and link-up for advanced treatment. Both officers appealed to all to extend their cooperation without any apprehension with a view to conducting the vaccination drive smoothly in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vaccination drive will begin across the country with 3,000 sites on Saturday which will be ramped up to 5,000 sites in the near future. The first to get the shots will be 30 million health workers and other frontline workers, followed by about 270 million people who are above 50 years of age while the government aims to vaccinate 300 million high-risk people over the next few months.
