LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Trained Home Guards' Association expressed strong reaction over the 'wrong' statement made by Water Resources and Public Relation Department Minister Pijush Hazarika in the budget session regarding the appointment of home guards. Further, the organization demanded the Chief Minister and the State Government to include all home guard jawans of the State in the appointment process.

In this context, the organization in a press release said, "Minister of the State Government, Pijush Hazarika on August 9 made wrong statement in the Assam Assembly in front of 126 MLAs that the home guards are appointed by the Association. The minister has made the ridiculous statement without any assurance to resolve the burning problems of the home guard jawans despite we have raised consecutive demands to the governments in this regard." Through the press release, the organization further clarified the appointment process of the home guard jawans in the State.

"The home guards are appointed by the District Commandant concerned under the supervision of the Director General of Police (DGP). At present, there are 24,696 trained home guards across the State. Out of them, only 10,500 home guards have been engaged in duty. We have come to know from a source that the State Government will reduce the figure up to 6,000 only. In this connection, we have demanded the State Government and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to initiate effective steps to ensure the appointment of all 24,696 home guard jawans without removing anyone of them from the process," the press release further stated.

Notably, the activists of the organization initiated a symbolic demonstration on Thursday in North Lakhimpur town opposing the statement of the minister and in support of their demand.
