TEZPUR: The Sonitpur district administration on Wednesday issued an order stating the last rites of all patients from the district who die of COVID-19 will be borne completely by the government and that the family of the deceased will not be liable to pay any money for the last rites.

The order comes a day after Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, during his visit to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday to review the COVID scenario in the district, directed the Deputy Commissioner regarding the same.

In this connection a team of officials – Circle Officer, Medical and Health Officer of the concerned BPHC, officer in-charge of the police station concerned and two numbers of lot mandals of the Revenue Circle concerned - have been entrusted with the responsibility to facilitate the last rites of all such patients. The Circle Officers have also been directed to identify suitable cremation grounds and activate helpline numbers for smooth functioning.

Two 108 ambulances have been stationed dedicatedly at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital to carry the bodies of such patients – Ayatul Rehman, Ph:8876523843, vehicle no: AS12AC5275 and Dhaneswar Patangia, Ph: 9864382576, vehicle no: AS12AC4350.

Deputy Commissioner Manvendra Pratap Singh paid a visit to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital at around 1.30 am on Wednesday morning and interacted through video calls with the doctors, nursing staff and cleaners on duty in the COVID ICU and COVID ward. He requested the doctors to be prompt and alert, especially during the night shifts so that critical patients could be saved. He also thanked them for rendering their valuable services in such testing times and encouraged them to continue the good work.
