Litterateur and environmentalist Sarmistha Preetam receives Homen Borgohain Award in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Influential literary figure of the State, Sarmistha Preetam and noted environmental activist Apurba Ballabh Goswami were honoured with the Homen Borgohain Trust Awards on Monday.

In a ceremonial programme held on the occasion in a befitting manner at the Homen Borgohin Trust and Children Park Project premises in Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district, State P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley conferred the Homen Borgohain Sahitya Bota to Sharmishtha Preetam of Nagaon and Seuj Bota to Apurba Ballabh Goswami Golaghat.

From this year, the Trust has introduced an academic award to two students belonging to poverty-stricken families who pass the HSLC examination overcoming their barriers. This award in this year was rewarded to Nimisha Borah and Raktim Ranjan Baruah. The awards comprises of cash amount, citation, bundles of books, xarai, gamosa and cheleng.

Noted intellectual figure of the State, Homen Borgohain as chief guest took part in the programme which was inaugurated by minister Naba Kumar Doley. Homen Borgohain, who is the son of credit of Dhakuakhana, said that he was always haunted by the memories of the beautiful place, though he had been outside of it for the obligation of his works since he was 13 years old. He expressed his resentment over the polluted condition of the River Charikoriya, the lifeline of Dhakuakhana.

The awardees also shared their feelings after they were honoured with the awards. Writer-singer Dr. Anjan Jyoti Choudhuri of Guwahati, novelist-publisher Nabin Baruah, writer Arnab Saikia, poet Rekha Baruah, environmental activist Anima Das Sarkar and Dhakuakhana SDO Arindam Baruah also spoke on the occasion in the presence of a galaxy of eminent personalities of the subdivision. Nabin Boruah extended an amount of Rs 1 lakh to the Trust while Rs 15,000 was donated by Apurba Ballabh Goswami.
