TINSUKIA: The Makum Water Supply scheme, the foundation stone of which was laid in 2007, has remained non-commissioned till now due to the 'lackadaisical attitude' of the Dibrugarh division of Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board though a substantial work had been completed long back.

With an estimated cost of Rs 7 crore under Swajal Jal Scheme of the Central Government, the work started on 2 bighas of land donated by Makum Mahila Aru Sishu Unnayan Kendra (Makum Mahila Samity) near Makum College. The foundation stone was laid by the then DoNER minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, in presence of former Digboi MLA Rameswar Dhanwar.

The Makum township being close to several oil wells, there is dearth of potable water. The locals expected that the water supply scheme would bring some relief and with that expectation, the land was donated on the request of Makum Town Committee. Usha Sarma, the secretary of Makum Mahila Aru Sishu Unnayan Kendra, lamented that by donating the land, the society committed a big mistake. Instead, the land should have been donated for other useful schemes. She, however, urged the new government led by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to expedite the project at the earliest.
