Mangaldai celebreates ‘Bharat Ratna’ award to bard of Assam Dr. Bhupen Hazarika

MANGALDAI: All sections of society of Mangaldai on Thursday evening, as per appeal made by district administration, celebrated the ‘Bharat Ratna’ award conferring moment with various cultural programs. To mark the historic day of conferring the highest civilian award to Dr. Hazarika, the district administration organized a well-attended function at Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Park on the bank of river Bega where Dr. Bhupen Hazarika spent his childhood days in Mangaldai and his brother Jayanta Hazarika was also born to the family of Nila Kanta Hazarika who rendered his service at Mangaldai as the Sub Deputy Collector (SDC), now Circle Officer.

Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Dass marked the beginning of the function by lighting a lamp in a traditional way while Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das offered floral garland on the full size statue of Dr. Hazarika. Both Deputy Commissioner Dass and legislator Das in their speech described the day of August 8 as a historic day of Assam and said that Dr. Hazarika was himself a state level institution. In the function anchored by Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulen Sarma, eminent artists Pranjal Sarma, Rinti Moni Deka, Daisy Sarma, senior artist Dwijendra Mohan Deva Sarma, upcoming musical talent Anwesha Goswami enthralled the audience with their melodious presentation of Bhupendra Sangeet.

The artists of Youth Club and office bearers of Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Committee of Mangaldai also took part in the function. Cultural organizer and Secretary of Youth Club Music College Rajib Kumar Deka (Mintu), in his speech, recalled the visit of Dr. Hazarika to Mangaldai and said that it was only because of the initiative of Dr. Hazarika the ‘Satriya Nritya’ got national recognition as the classical dance form.

Addressing the function, media person Bhargab Kumar Das recalled the visit of Dr. Hazarika to the undivided Darrang district during the violent days of 1983 who with his musical magic took a key role in bringing back the peaceful situation. ‘Dr. Hazarika during the peak hours of the separate statehood movement in 1988 visited many areas of Udalguri Mazbat, Panery and Dimakuchi, where thousands of people extended a rousing welcome to him that too in a very critical hours’ he added.

Mention may be made here that all the dignitaries including Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Dass, legislator Guru Jyoti Das, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulen Sarma took part in the chorus ‘Mangaldai tomar naam houk mangal tomar” which was performed by Dr. Hazarika in the open session of Asom Sahitya Sabha at Mangaldai in 1974.
