NUMALIGARH: River Brahmaputra continues to swallow hectares of agricultural land at various places in Numaligarh in Golaghat district. Areas like Riri Teliyabari, Lohore Chapori, Namtemera and Alengmari are facing massive erosion. More than 50 families of Teliyabari area under Dishou Gaon Panchayat of Bokakhat subdivision are spending sleepless nights as the river is only metres away from their homes and is closing in after the massive erosion. People are upset as no anti-erosion measures have been taken by the Water Resources Department to save their lands. Many families are already making temporary shelters on the higher lands of embankment areas.

On the other hand, Alengmari Jaan embankment was totally breached by the rising water on Wednesday. The whole area containing hundreds of bighas of barodhan crop is reported to have submerged in water. The situation may worsen as the weather reports predicted that heavy rains will continue in many isolated places of Golaghat district till May 30.
