SILCHAR: It was like a hurricane tour of the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi by Minister of State for Health, Pijush Hazarika, but it was significant in more than one way. There have been no political strings attached with his visit which concluded on August 28. If his visit a month ago here was more criticized than appreciated with lot of questions from the opposition about the sincerity of his assurances on improving health infrastructure and medical services, this time the Minister looked quite confident to assure and deliver. No space was given to the adversaries to cook their stories to nail him.

The Minister's visit was sudden and surprising. He played to the gallery by winning the hearts of members of bereaved families and people in general. Of priority for him was to meet them and he did. He went to the house of COVID-19 victims, Samar Deb at Nutanpatty, Sandip Paul at Sashan Road, and Kiransashi Bhattacharjee at Ambicapatty of this town. His words of consolation and sympathy went deep into their psyche. From their accounts, Pijush Hazarika could know about shortcomings also in medical services of SMCH for rectification.

As SMCH has been at the centre stage of criticism from citizens for its scores of infrastructure deficiencies and also complaints in respect of treatment, resulting in deaths, the Minister came with a team of doctors from GMCH to investigate and put the record straight. Their investigation found no deficiency and negligence in SMCH which was shared with the media to its volley of questions. Minister Pijush Hazarika attributed a good number of deaths with specific cases to conceal the dangerous virus by sitting at home and rushing to hospitals too late.

His visit like a grass root worker was to work for betterment of people, for better health services. The Minister instead of giving assurance made arrangement for 50 oxygen concentrates for SMCH and 10 for Karimganj Civil Hospital. Capacity in ICU is to be raised to 14 in view of the unchecked COVID-19 cases. At his review meetings with district, police administration, health department as well as political leaders at the three district headquarters, Pijush Hazarika laid stress on mounting RAT to identify and isolate the positive cases to check the spread of virus and also to monitor the cases of those in home isolation. This has no doubt added a new challenge before the health department. On the whole, the visit of Minister of state for Health has its salutary effect.
