Guwahati:

Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa on Thursday, May 28, was present at the seeing off ceremony of 15 Covid-19 patients who were being discharged from the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) after recovering from the infection. The release of this particular batch of patients gained extra significance as it included Tilak Deka, a lab technician from the MMCH who got infected in the line of duty.

"Tilak Deka is a lab technician who got infected in the line of duty, and we have released him as he has made a complete recovery. He is being sent home, and will resume his duties after a period of 14 days", Sarma told media.

Biswa Sarma, who was accompanied by fellow Minister Pijush Hazarika, later took to Twitter where he wrote, "Always a delight to see smiles! Was present at MMCH with Pijush Hazarika during discharge of 15 brave-hearts, including Tilak Deka (Lab Technician at MMCH) who got infected on line of duty. They all fought a spirited battle & won! We shall all win. Have heart and faith."

The release of these patients shall come as a relief to Assam, which has been hard-hit by the deadly contagion. Continuing to inch upwards, the state Government's tally now shows 880 cases of the coronavirus, and 770 active cases. Four persons have been succumbed to death.

It is pertinent to mention here that 16 more Covid-19 patients have been discharged from Assam hospitals after successfully recovering from the virus on Thursday. While 15 patients were released from the Mahendra Mohan Choudhary Hospital (MMCH), 1 patient has been released from Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

Why the number of cases is increasing:

Experts and administrators largely attribute this sharp spike in the number of cases to the return of Assam citizens who were stranded in other parts of the country amid the lockdown. Thousands upon thousands have returned via rail, road, and flight, and a vast number of cases have been detected in the quarantine centres.

Recently, Biswa Sarma told the press that over 1 lakh stranded citizens have returned back, and over 1 lakh people are on their way. However, the Minister said that the number is expected to drop down in the coming times as industries and companies are starting to reopen all over the country amid laxing of lockdown relaxations by the Centre as it seeks to get to economy going.
