My Ammajan as I knew her

Gathering up the courage to write an obituary of one's own mother is nevertheless one of the toughest things to do. But it would serve as a means to convey to the community the person, the passions and the memories of the deceased. This is my humble effort to do the same.

Our Amma, Letifa Rahman, left us for her heavenly abode on March 2, 2021. I cannot help but first mention her child-like nature, sheer purity of heart and an ever-smiling kind demeanor. She was affectionate towards young and old, rich or poor, and she was the easiest person to get along with, even for a stranger.

From my childhood days in Jorhat, I remember that being the youngest of her three daughters, I wouldn't want to leave her side and accompanied her pretty much everywhere and sure loved all the attention. An ardent lover of education, even though she herself couldn't go for higher studies, she was always enthusiastic about getting involved in our school projects, and was always encouraging us to compete in different competitions, such as essay writing, recitation, debate as well as also a few sports that we showed interest in.

One of her outstanding talents was sewing. She was an excellent seamstress, stitched many beautiful dresses with her own original ideas for the three of us, and was often asked by neighbours and friends to come up with her own business. Amma never took it up as she felt that it would hinder her care towards her daughters and made sure she was available for us at all times. She always managed to be resourceful. Even if things were not always bountiful around the house, she made sure we had enough. She stressed the idea of living within one's means and not to splurge unnecessarily, which also meant being able to save for the unforeseen future.

I would have so much to say endlessly about dear Amma. Regardless of whether I say or not, I know her teachings, guiding thoughts and love for the three of us will be with us forever. On her chalisa, we pray that Allah grant her eternal peace in heaven, Ameen.
