Notorious Criminal Asha Babu Islam Involved In Murder While Out On Bail

MANGALDAI: With the recent arrest of notorious absconding criminal Asha Babu Islam, it has come to light that a number of suspected criminals take advantage of their release on bail to get involved in criminal activities.

Arrested Asha Babu Islam – the prime accused in the sensational and daring robbery and murder of eminent lawyer and then president of Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce, Binoy Kumar Ghosh on August 28, 2014 - even after release from jail on bail, was involved in the gruesome murder of his stepmother, that too in connivance with his father.

According to the police, Asha Babu’s father Siddique Ali of village Bihudiya under Kharupetia Police station in Darrang district had married one Murshida Begum. She was his second wife. But later Murshida fled away to her parents’ home after being physically tortured by her husband. To take revenge, the father and son duo forcibly took her from her parents’ house and set her on fire. Murshida succumbed to her burn injuries on July 15, 2018. The Kharupetia Police had registered a case vide number 270/18 under section 307/302/498/494 of Indian Penal Code and immediately arrested Siddique Ali while Asha Babu was absconding since then.

The prolonged absence of Asha Babu in the dates fixed by the court also resulted in issue of proclamation and attachment notice against him. Finally, a team of Darrang Police on June 21 managed to arrest this absconding criminal and recovered one sophisticated revolver along with five rounds of live ammunition from his possession. According to police, arrested Asha Babu has also confessed his involvement in several criminal activities in Guwahati and other areas during his period on bail. Earlier, he looted 1,250 grams of gold from a jewellery shop in Kerala which later he sold at Kharupetia at Rs 3 lakh.
