NAGAON: District Legal Services Authority, Nagaon along with Kaki local police on Friday morning rescued an octogenarian couple from Kaki no 2 Deobali village after they were tortured for long and abandoned by their children. According to sources, the couple has been identified as Praffulla Nath (80) and his wife Humeswari Devi. The couple was taken to Neelbagan model hospital for health check-up and then to the Rangolu-based old-age home of Gram Vikash Parishad, Nagaon. Some local people said that earlier the couple lived a happy life with their two sons and four daughters. But soon after the children got married, the property was divided between the two sons and a few bighas of land were kept for the couple.

The younger son, Suneswar Nath was unhappy with the property distribution between them and hence he insisted that the couple should give their land to him, which the couple opposed. This resulted in the souring of relations between Suneswar Nath and his parents. He allegedly used to physically torture them in their house in Deobali village. He subsequently threw them out of their house and they were forced to take shelter in the houses of their relatives and local people. But when their plight was highlighted by the local media, local police as well as the District Legal Services Authority, Nagaon on Friday rushed to the village and rescued the old couple.
