On Ganesh Chaturthi, Stress Laid on Elephant Conservation

Numaligarh: On Ganesh Chaturthi, Assam Forest Department and the Corbett Foundation organized an open event in Gauhati University.

The Department of Sociology of the university coordinated the programme. PCCF and HoFF, Assam, AM Singh interacted with the students, artists, teachers, researchers, and media representatives during the ‘Jumbo Chaupal’ event of the programme. He suggested that all the stakeholders should jointly work and support the forest department in creating an atmosphere for the co-existence of human beings and wildlife. He explained how the forest department of Assam was working very closely with the local community in Nagaon district to address human-elephant conflict issue.

The Corbett Foundation invited artists, students and teachers from the Arts College to use paint and brush to depict the challenges which elephants face today. Students and teachers from schools around Deepor Beel participated in sketch and painting competition. They vividly expressed their concern for the elephants facing difficulty due to fragmentation of their habitat. AM Singh answered the questions which the students asked regarding the human-elephant conflict.

The event was an attempt to engage dialogue of various stakeholders in Assam. AM Singh shared his experience of elephant conservation and it marked a great way to open the channels of communication and engagement. Dr Naveen Pandey, Deputy Director of Corbett Foundation, said that barring few incidents of retaliation, Assamese farmers had great tolerance for elephants and this tolerance came from Lord Ganesha, the elephant god.
