MANGALDAI: Darrang Police eliminated a hardcore criminal in a successful operation on NH-15 near Saktola bridge under Mangaldai Police Station on Tuesday.

In view of the alarmingly increasing incidents of robbery, theft and drugs trafficking in some areas of the district and acting on an input about the possibility of a major robbery in Mangaldoi town, Mangaldai Police, as per the instruction of Superintendent of Police

Amrit Bhuyan, laid a special naka near the bridge. At around 3.10 am on Tuesday, a group of four anti-social elements riding on two motorcycles was confronted by the patrolling party of Mangaldai PS led by SI Chandan Das. Defying the police, they tried to flee and opened fire upon the patrolling party, to which the police party offered retaliation. However, taking advantage of the cover of darkness, two miscreants in one motorcycle fled away via NH-15 towards Sipajhar and the other two miscreants tried to flee on the second motorcycle towards Borthekerabari village. In the meantime, Additional Superintendent of Police Ujjwal Pratim Barua and Officer in-charge of Mangaldai Police Station, Inspector Niranjan Barua arrived on the spot with additional force.

During the search operation conducted in the entire area, an unknown person was found lying with a pistol in his hand at a distance of about 300 metre from the National Highway while a Pulsar motorcycle was also found lying near the road. Though he was immediately shifted to Mangaldai Civil Hospital, the attending doctors declared him as brought dead.

However, the other three gang members managed to escape by opening fire upon the police party. The police have continued their operation to trace the three anti-social elements. Till filing of this report, the deceased was yet to be identified.
