Over 2.5 lakh Covid-19 tests carried out in Assam

Guwahati: After placing great emphasis on ramping up Covid-19 tests, the Assam Government has conducted 2,58,797 tests up until today, informed the State's Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

More than 12,000 tests were carried out within 24 hours, prompting Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to tweet, "My salute to the Team for having covered over 12,000 more tests, taking our #COVID19 testing figures for today to 258797. It was 246,590 on June 18. Request all to cooperate with our teams."

The break-up of the tests conducted per testing center is as follows:

Jorhat Medical College and Hospital: 30,110

Silchar Medical College and Hospital: 23,620

Guwahati Medical College and Hospital Hilltop Lab: 42,406

Tezpur Medical College and Hospital: 28,237

FAA Medical College and Hospital: 37,934

Diphu Medical College and Hospital: 1,107

Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology: 5,305

Regional Medical Research Centre: 21,411

Defence Research and Development Organization: 1,704

North East Institute of Science & Technology: 749

With the Covid-19 positive cases ticking upwards across the state at an alarming rate, the Health Department has launched the Assam Targeted Surveillance Program (ATSP) from June 17 onwards.

Under this program, more than 50,000 random testings will be conducted within a week, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed. The program, which will be carried out all the 33 districts of the state, will aim to screen persons in certain categories who have been deemed as extra volatile and likely carriers of the respiratory illness.

Meanwhile, the total number of cases in Assam has clambered up to 4,904, with 2,044 patients active. At the same time, as many as 9 persons in the state have died due to virus complications. The latest death has been reported on Thursday from the Diphu Medical College in Karbi Anglong, and is the second in the district.
