Pengaree murder mystery unravelled, two arrested

DIGBOI: Relentless manhunt operation of Pengaree Police led by DSP Samarjyoti Bhuyan since the past couple of days finally yielded result and the mystery shrouding the murder of a teenager, Ranjit Gawala (15) in Khatangpani Tea Garden under Pengaree Police Station in Tinsukia district was solved.

According to Bhuyan, of the three accused involved in committing the crime on the evening of October 19, two were arrested on Wednesday afternoon while another accomplice committed suicide on October 20 mysteriously, a day after the incident. The arrested accused were identified as Biral Urang (40), son of Nor Urang, and Dharam Singh Urang (35), son of Krishna Urang, both residing in and around Khatangpani tea garden residential areas.

While admitting to committing the heinous crime at Pengaree Police Station, the mastermind Dharam Singh Urang, who had planned the entire plot, said that one Jagat Gogoi (40), who committed suicide the next evening, was also involved with them in the act. According to the confession of Dharam Singh Urang, the gruesome act was perpetrated jointly to take revenge on the deceased following his debate centring round some salary-related issues with one of the accused. The deceased, who was in the Karam Puja celebration site that fateful night, was called by one of the accused and he assaulted him at a distance. Later, with the help of two accomplices, they killed the deceased in the fit of intoxication, hitting him with a sharp branch of a tree and local dao.

“After committing the act, I went home, changed the dress at around 1 am and joined the dancing team in the nearby Karam Puja celebration pandal till the morning,” said Dharam Singh Urang, adding, “I wanted to be seen in the video footage which could prove my presence in the pandal if required,” said the accused without a sense of repentance in his expressions.

While the exact nature and reason behind the suicide of one of the accused the next day is not clear, the police termed it as suicide based on circumstantial evidences.

Meanwhile, the Pengaree unit of the Assam Tae Tribe Student Association lauded the relentless efforts of the police for speedy and effective result in this case. “Arrest of the culprit involved in commissioning this dastardly act within a short time of three days speaks well of the seriousness and efficiency of Pengaree Police in delivering justice to the parents and relatives of the deceased teenager,” said Asif Ahmed, the Additional Superintendent of Police of Tinsukia, while interacting with the The Sentinel on Wednesday evening.

However, based on the FIR lodged by Tuphan Gawala, the father of the deceased, the arrested duos were booked adequately and prosecuted u/s 302 IPC after the case was registered under Pengearee Police Station Case No 56/2019 dated 20.10.2019.
