Pitiable Road Condition at Ghunasuti, Woman Gives Birth Under Open Sky

A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR: Even after 73 years of Independence, the greater Ghunasuti area located in the Subansiri river valley has been deprived of development. Be it academic sector or human health-related services or road communication system, development has not touched the area till date.

Because of the poor road connectivity in Ghunasuti and dereliction of health services concerned in the district, a mother gave birth to her child under the open sky at Ghagar Ghat on the bank of Subansiri River on Wednesday while she was on the way to North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital (NLCH).

Urumi Taid (24), a wife of Mohan Taid, a poor farmer and permanent resident of Jamuguri village under Ghunasuti Gaon Panchayat, was shifted to NLCH from Ghunasuti Health Sub-Centre at Baghmora village after she developed labour pain. She was brought to Ghagar Ghat of Subansiri River by a horse cart covering almost three km distance of the deplorable road from the health sub-center.

Youth activist Mani Panging, who is the chairperson of Ghunasuti Regional Unit Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), called the 108 Mrityunjoy Service but the ambulance allegedly did not arrive at the place. As a result, the mother gave birth to the child in the presence of the ASHA worker concerned at Ghagar Ghat just after crossing the Subansiri River from Ghunasuti to go to North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital. Later, she was taken back home on the horse cart again crossing the river. Notably, the authority of 108 Mrityunjoy Service office of the district did not call back the caller though they promised to do so as a reply to his call.

The poor fate of the woman due to the pitiable condition of the area has provoked a strong reaction in the locality. The conscious people of the area and Lakhimpur MASS expressed grave concern over the issue. Lakhimpur district unit MASS secretary Raju Singha stated that the incident of a woman giving birth under the open sky due to failure of the government and administrative machinery was a violation of human rights.

He, along with the people of the locality, demanded the State Government and the district administration to construct a bridge over the Subansiri River immediately and to upgrade the road communication system in Ghunasuti.
