GOLAGHAT: The gaon burahs of rural areas are playing a vital role to smoothly conduct the administration. But most of the gaon burahs of Golaghat district, especially in the DAB (Disputed Area Border) area of Assam-Nagaland border, have been rendering their service without any government remuneration.

On Wednesday, senior government advocate Jayanta Kumar Goswami submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal urging the necessary initiative to provide government remuneration and other allowances to those gaon burahs who have been serving in the disputed area of Assam-Nagaland border.

In the memorandum, Goswami said that 117 gaon burahs of 117 villages under the Gomariguri Development block in Merapani of Golaghat district were appointed by the district administration to render the service under the guidelines of the government. After the engagement of gaon burahs to date no remuneration has been provided to them by the government.

Gaon burahs in the DAB area are highly essential for the district administration to conduct election, census operation, issuance of caste, PRC (educational purpose) certificate, identification of people and implementation of government welfare schemes. Despite all this, the gaon burahs of these disputed areas have to provide service without any remuneration and financial assistance. Senior advocate Jayanta Kumar Goswami appealed to the government and department concerned to take immediate initiative for providing remuneration and other assistance to the concerned of Assam-Nagaland disputed areas.
