PATHSALA: In a unique initiative, traffic violators in Pathsala in Barpeta district were offered gamosa by Pathsala Police and requested not to violate traffic rules.

The police took this unconventional initiative to create awareness among the commuters on road safety as part of the National Road Safety Week. “The objective of the initiative is to create awareness about obeying traffic norms,” Pathsala police outpost officer-in-charge Chandan Rout said. He added that police carried out the campaign to spread the message that police were citizen-friendly and they only wanted to ensure the safety of the commuters.

“I was shocked when one of the policemen offered me gamosa and asked to wear a helmet from next time. It was my fault and I will make sure that I do not repeat it again,” said a biker.

The gamosa has a great significance in Assamese culture and tradition and it is a unique identity of the Assamese society. The police distributed it to traffic violators in several areas of Pathsala town in Barpeta district amidst the Bihu celebration and charged a fine of Rs500 for not wearing a helmet.
