TINSUKIA: A smart rainfall in Tinsukia district on Saturday evening after a long dry spell has brought some relief to tea gardens which already had experienced a loss of crop production to the extent of 20 percent during the first flush.

Madhurjya Barooah, secretary, Zone I, ABITA Dibrugarh said due to unfavourable weather condition and poor rainfall, infestation by pest has been reported from several tea gardens as the application of pesticides under such condition was not desirable. Even nutrient and fertilizers could not be applied after the first flush (harvest) as tea bushes may not withstand tolerance to such chemicals due to insufficient rainfall. Though the optimum rainfall required for proper growth is 6-8 inches, till now the gardens are deficient of desired quantity, Barooah told. While the second flush is due at the end of May, the situation is likely to improve in another fortnight else tea industry would face unprecedented loss as the second flush is being considered as a quantum crop to which the entire tea industry sustains, Barooah opined. While the COVID pandemic cast a gloomy state of affairs in 2020, unfavourable weather coupled with hailstorm also hit the plucking of leaves during the first quarter, Barooah added.
