Ranganadi embankment construction remains incomplete

LAKHIMPUR, June 15: “The empowerment and strengthening works of Ranganadi embankment have not been completed until the advent of the rainy season of this year. After the repeated confirmation by the Chief Minister and State Water Resources Minister, the work remained incomplete which is a matter of deep regret. As a result of this, the people of the district will face devastation caused by the river this year too.” The apprehension was voiced by the Lakhimpur district unit of Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha (BAYM) on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at North Lakhimpur Press Club, president of the organization, Chiranjit Bordoloi, working president Anupam Saikia, secretary Bikash Bhumiz and the president of Lakhimpur Regional Committee expressed strong reaction regarding the issue. Anupam Saikia stated that the left embankment of Ranganadi at Bagalijan and right embankment at Amtala-Joinpur had been breached due to non-instalment of geomate on July 9 and July 11 respectively last year. The breaches of the embankments at two places caused massive damage in the district along with the casualty of human lives.

Taking stock of the post-flood situation, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, then Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju and State Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta promised to mitigate the problem to save the flood victims of the district by completing the construction of the Ranganadi embankment empowerment and strengthening works, which had been underway since 2014, with the investment of Rs. 362 crore under Flood Management Plan of the Union government.

“But Shivam Company which was given the job, has still not installed geomate at several points of the embankments causing erosion and rain-cuts in the embankments constructed filling with earth recently. Under such circumstance, the river will stand as a tremendous threat to the right embankment in the forthcoming days along with the left embankment,” Anupam Saikia added. He questioned why the construction of the embankments of the river had been incomplete for five years. In this regard, the organization complained against a section of contractors and demanded the Chief Minister’s immediate intervention with a view to complete the embankment construction work of Ranganadi river.
